Great family place, and great fun for the kids. Will keep coming back and highly recommend to anyone. The biggest thrill is when you are lucky enough to pull a ruby or sapphire out that is truly amazing. Matt or Lisa will come by and re-scan your material periodically to check if you missed anything.

Matt will come back shortly and give short presentation on what the gems and minerals look like in the rough, trust me they don't come out of the ground all polished and faceted. So you have been given directions and you've started sluicing your dirt. The worst thing you would want is to find a beautiful sapphire or ruby and drop it in the flume. You then go over to the flumes and Matt will give you an introduction, pay attention because he is speaking from experience on the do's and don'ts of how to clean your material. When you arrive you will get a brief orientation to the site and sign a liability waiver. I would recommend getting there early to maximize your time. It does take time to clean the dirt from your rocks and look closely for anything of value. We came to western North Carolina again this summer, and the first place we visit is Cherokee.

We now try to go mining at different locations every summer. Cherokee Ruby Mine got us hooked on the mining bug. Last summer my wife and I decided to do something different on our vacation and decided to go mining. Matt, Lisa, and their mom have a great thing going. You will get dirty and have some great memories. If you are looking for a place that is a down to earth family run business where you have a chance of finding something special that you are the first to ever touch, this is your place.
